The gearshift housing is the central component inside the switching unit and integrates other castings in this assembly. Due to the thin-walled and complex design rapid prototyping investment casting was selected for prototypes and first small production. A challenge was to produce the prototypes from the silicone mold and wax models. To prevent the parts from distortion ACTech used special fixtures for deposit and gauges in each process stage. The effort included air-conditioned intermediate storage of the wax models. The 5 axis CNC machining of castings in danger of distortion demanded special attention also to avoid erroneous manufacturing.
After the delivery and the test run of the first machined castings, slight changes in design were made to stabilize geometry. Small series production began with the slightly changed structure. The main focus was on keeping the components as uniform as possible, as it is the case in series manufacturing.
