It is not uncommon for a final customer to be unable to reach a decision for months and then suddenly to order higher quantities of prototypes at short notice. This way, it is possible to avoid a delay in the entire trial process, as in this case of an industrial engine for a field shredder. If the decision about placing the series order also depends on the test result during the harvest season, suppliers with extremely short response times are sought after.
In the case of the oil pan for the industrial engine, the period from making available the CAD data record to the delivery of the first manufacturing batch with 8 completely produced parts was limited to only three weeks. The first DMM®- molds were completely milled in direct molding material at the same time that the modeling equipment for the follow-up small series was manufactured. Integration of the modeling equipment was carried out gradually upon its completion, and it replaced the DMM®- mold segments which had been used until then. As a result, minimal turnaround times for the start of production, which were made possible by Rapid Castings®, were combined with a technology capable of producing higher part quantities in small series in an ideal manner.
